Grab your rake and hoe.

Many of you chortle a solid “Yea, right!” to the minimum recommended 30 minutes of exercise four to five times each week. Many of you might also be surprised by how much “exercise” you actually receive while working out in the yard.

Do you push-mow the lawn? Spend a few hours digging, planting and/or weeding? Rake the yard? Pick up sticks and loose debris? Well, guess what? That counts as exercise.

Regular garden chores can burn anywhere from 250 to 400 calories per hour, depending on the intensity of the chore. The added bonus is that a day spent beating up the yard has a way of beating out stresses, all the while bringing beauty to your world.

Consider Ralph Waldo Emerson’s take on gardening; “When I go into my garden with a spade, and dig a bed, I feel such an exhilaration and health that I discover that I have been defrauding myself all this time in letting others do for me what I should have done with my own hands.”
