Perimenopause - Menopause Exercise Tip, July 1, 2005

Simple Yoga at Home or the Office.

 

When you need to relax after a stressful encounter with your boss or a client, these two simple postures can dial down the blood pressure in a snap - even at your desk!

Chair Relaxation: Sit upright in any comfortable chair, knees bent, feet on the floor and hands in your lap. Lean your head against the chair back if it's high enough. Close your eyes and begin to pay attention to your breath. Take at least 5 long inhalations and exhalations, letting go of the tension in your abdomen, shoulders and jaw. Focus your attention inward and listen to the sounds around you without reacting to them. Stay in this pose for at least 5 minutes. (You can practice this exercise anywhere: at your desk, in an airplane seat or a taxi, or in front of your computer.) Try this exercise whenever you feel
exhausted and feel peace and sanity return to your life.

Table and Chair Pose: Sitting in a chair with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, lean forward with your trunk and rest your head and arms on your desk. Tuck your arms under your head for support and then turn your head to one side and close your eyes. Making sure you are comfortable, begin to breath slowly - at least 5 slow inhalations and exhalations. Then turn your head to the other side and repeat the same slow breathing. After your slow breathing exercises, remain resting on your hands for 2 to 5 minutes before using your hands to help you slowly sit up.
