Buying the Right Shoes.



From world-class Olympians to people just starting out, shoes are the most important piece of equipment you need for walking or running. Having the right footwear will make running and walking a more enjoyable experience while old, worn-out shoes can cause sore knees, back aches and other joint ails. Save yourself pain and discomfort and invest in a good pair of shoes.

When buying your first pair of shoes, you should shop at a store that specializes in walking and running shoes. You have a much better chance of finding knowledgeable staff trained to offer guidance in buying the right shoe. This is especially critical for beginning walkers who don't know their foot needs.

Are you a flat-footed over-pronator? A high-arched under-pronator? Do you need a motion control shoe or a cushion shoe? You won’t know unless you have knowledgeable staff that can look at your foot and examine the way you walk.

To help the sales staff get you in the right shoe, bring an old shoe. An experienced salesperson can examine the wear pattern. You will also want to bring any orthodontics and insoles that you normally wear and a pair of socks that you will use to walk in. Wear these while trying on shoes to get the right fit.
