Every day about 4,000 women reach menopause - a natural time in a woman’s life when she finds herself free of PMS, menstruation and birth control issues. Without the menopause symptoms that typically follow, women would gladly herald this time of their life with excitement.

Yet, the menopause symptoms - hot flashes, mood swings, fatigue and foggy thinking, to name a few - often bring physical and emotion stress to women.

There are 34 menopause signs and symptoms typically listed and these 34 menopause signs and symptoms are what send most women running to their doctor for hormone replacement therapy.

Some women resort to hormone replacement therapy to diminish these menopause symptoms but hormone replacement therapy creates a whole new set of symptoms, side effects and health risks that many women are unwilling to take.

Many women seek effective natural hormone replacement therapy to diminish the 34 menopause signs and symptoms while promoting physical and emotional health and well-being.

NEW!! NEW!!! BIG DRUG COMPANIES USING THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION IN AN ATTEMPT TO DESTROY COMPETITION FROM NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES!!!

Do you remember our newsletter last year detailing how Wyeth Pharmaceuticals was attempting to stop compounding pharmacists from prescribing natural progesterone (diosgenin) after their profits fell by more than 57%  from $2.07 billion in 2003 to $800 million in 2004 (after the WHI study had to be stopped)?

Well, now they have gone after centers like ours making complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).  The FTC's position backed by the big pharmaceutical companies is that Dr. John Lee, M.D.'s studies were not scientific and did not rise to the standard of FDA and National Institutes of Health studies, and that our claims about natural progesterone are false, unfair, deceptive, misleading advertising in violation of the law..

(Please read what Dr. Helen Pensanti M.D. has to say about this. Read on to how the study was conducted.)

This is an attempt to force women into taking unsafe proven cancer causing synthetic hormones using your tax dollar to harass natural hormone suppliers. We here at the Women's Menopause Health Center refuse to take away your choice of a healthy alternative to Premarin, Prempro and the other dangerous drugs. We are taking a stand against this heavy handed attempt to destroy competition. We are going to fight for your choice of a healthy way to get through menopause comfortably and safely.

(Ed. note: This was from our newsletter last year. The continued harassment by the FTC has caused us to discontinue our wonderful product. DO NOT be forced into taking something that can kill you. You may purchase safe progesterone cream at your local health food store, or find it a lot less expensively on line at places like ebay and yahoo stores. Do not let these heavy handed tactics destroy your health!)

Virtually all of the 34 menopause signs and symptoms can be treated and safely and naturally without hormone replacement therapy. Natural hormone replacement therapy includes herbal treatments, diet supplementation with natural, plant-based estrogen components and healthy lifestyle changes.

Full-swing menopause symptoms can last from six months to two years. Most of the 34 menopause signs and symptoms are caused by the decrease and fluctuation of reproductive hormones in a woman’s body. Other menopause signs and symptoms are part of the natural aging process, which can accelerate as the body goes through menopause.

About 75 percent of women report uncomfortable menopause symptoms. How intense and frequent women experience some or all of the 34 menopause symptoms is highly individual.

Although past thinking placed menopause as the point when "it’s all downhill from here," women today understand that this transition often begins about some of their best years. The trick is getting through menopause symptoms as easily and healthy as possible so they can get on to those "best years."

The 34 Menopause Signs and Symptoms:

  • Hot Flashes: Hot flashes are the most common of the 34 menopause signs and symptoms, with over 60 percent of menopause women experiencing this menopause symptom. Hot flashes are a direct result of hormonal fluctuation and imbalance and the most common reason why women seek hormone replacement therapy. Most women experience the majority of hot flashes in the first two years of menopause.
  • Fatigue: Fatigue is a common menopause symptoms complaint, especially for women who experience night sweats (nighttime hot flashes) that interrupt sleep patterns.
  • Insomnia: Insomnia is often caused by night sweats but can also occur without these hot flash menopause symptoms.
  • Mood swings: Fluctuating hormone levels can have women crying at the drop of a hat for no apparent reason. Many women feel as if they are on an emotional roller coaster. Relaxation therapy, stress reduction measures, exercise and natural hormone replacement therapy often buffer the effects of this and other menopause symptoms.
  • Irritability: Irritability can go hand-in-hand with mood swings. Think of this as the PMS of menopausal women.
  • Anxiety: The female sex hormones affect certain chemicals in the brain that affect mood. Women’s mood can be affected when these hormones are out of kilter, causing a variety of emotional upheavals like mood swings, irritability, depression and anxiety.
  • Depression: This "menopause symptom" can also be caused by external stimuli. Changes in career and marriage, children growing up and leaving the home and new responsibilities of caring for aging parents - issues many women of menopause age face - can also cause depression. Women are especially susceptible to depression if they are run down and fatigued from other menopause symptoms.
  • Exacerbation of existing conditions: Just as some menopause symptoms can spur on others, they can also place a greater stress on existing conditions.
  • Vaginal dryness: The vaginal lining becomes thinner and less flexible during menopause, which can cause vaginal dryness and the following symptom, painful intercourse. Regular sexual intercourse can keep the vagina moistened and toned.
  • Painful Intercourse: The thinning of vaginal lining can also cause painful intercourse.
  • Incontinence: The organs surrounding the vagina can also thin and shrink during menopause. The thinning of the bladder and urethra can cause incontinence.
  • Urinary Tract Changes: Also related to the thinning of the vagina and surrounding organs. The pH balance in menopausal women becomes more alkaline, promoting an environment more conducive to bacterial growth. Women might also experience the urge to urinate more frequently. Calcium helps to restore proper pH levels returning the body back to its healthy state.
  • Decreased libido: Another of the common menopause symptoms caused, in part, by fluctuating and decreased hormone levels as well as other menopause symptoms and life issues. Feelings of fatigue, stress and emotional upheaval can affect women’s sex life.
  • Water retention/bloating: Just when you thought the PMS symptoms were over... Fluctuating hormone levels can cause water retention.
  • Sore, Tender Breasts: Yet another PMS symptom that carries over to menopause symptoms.
  • Memory Lapses: Estrogen plays an important role in memory and the functioning of nerve cells in the brain. With decreased levels of estrogen, women can experience memory difficulties.
  • Difficulty Concentrating, "Foggy" Thinking: Also related to memory issues.
  • Osteoporosis: A decrease in bone density is a natural part of aging but occurs most rapidly during and after menopause. A decrease in bone density places women at a higher risk for fractures. Post-menopausal women can reduce the effects of osteoporosis, which can produce serious and life-threatening effects, by supplementing their diet with extra calcium and Vitamin D in addition to regular weight-bearing exercise.
  • Tooth Loss: Linked to osteoporosis. With the loss of bone in the jaw, the teeth do not fit as well in their sockets.
  •  Increased Gum Disease: Lower estrogen levels can cause changes in the mouth and gums and bleeding of the gums.
  • Changes in breath: Along with bad taste in the mouth, changes in breath are related to the above mentioned menopause symptoms.
  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears): Menopausal women often report ringing in the ears, also called "tinnitus."
  • Thinning Hair, Increased Facial Hair: This symptom, like brittle fingernails and dry skin, is related to falling hormone levels. Women whose hair loss is significant may choose to wear wigs or explore hair replacement measures.
  • Brittle Fingernails: Also related to falling hormone levels.
  • Dry Skin, Age Spots: To diminish the affects of this menopause symptom, women should limit their sun exposure and cigarette smoking and use ample doses of moisturizers daily. Sun damage is directly related to age spots. Sun damage and smoking are directly related to the formation of wrinkles.
  • Heart/Cardiovascular Disease: As the production of estrogen decreases, the risk of heart attack, strokes and cardiovascular disease increases. It is extremely important for menopausal women to maintain normal cholesterol levels and exercise regularly to keep the heart healthy and fit.

Other Common Menopause Symptoms:

  • Heart palpitations.
  • Headaches/ migraines.
  • Muscle tension.
  • Aching joints/muscles.
  • Weight gain/increased appetite.
  • Dizziness, light-headedness.
  • Gastrointestinal changes (indigestion, gas, nausea).
  • Tingling feeling in hands and feet.

As noted earlier, fluctuating and decreasing hormone levels cause many of the 34 menopause symptoms. Replacing these hormones with hormone replacement therapy does greatly decrease menopause symptoms but also greatly increases serious health risks. Replacing these hormones through natural means offers a healthful solution to the 34 menopause symptoms women can experience.

Natural hormone therapy includes natural, plant-based estrogen along with herbal treatments. Exercise, eating a healthy, balanced diet and smoking cessation also play important and significant roles in a women’s ability to transition through menopause and achieve weight loss with little effect from these menopause symptoms.
