Are You Informed About Your Health Care?Ladies. This is really scary. I just read a report from the Stanford University Medical Center that said that less than one-third of women are aware of landmark Women's Health Initiative (WHI) hormone therapy study in 2002.
The large-scale Women's Health Initiative released in 2002 showed that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is linked to substantial increases in the risk of developing breast cancer, heart disease, strokes and blood clots. Additionally, when estrogen is prescribed alone, it can increase the risk of ovarian cancer.
Despite the huge publicity generated by the study on the potential dangers of hormone therapy for postmenopausal women, new research from the Stanford University School of Medicine found that only 29 percent of women surveyed knew about the study two years later. Additionally, the women were able to correctly identify the possible benefits and risks linked to hormone therapy just 40 percent of the time.
The results of the Stanford study were published in the September/October issue of the journal "Menopause."
The WHI findings were the subject of unprecedented media coverage and triggered enormous changes in the use of hormone therapy. Hormone therapy prescriptions dropped 38 percent in the year following the 2002 estrogen-progestin findings, according to the researcher's previous study, with more recent data suggesting continued declines in hormone therapy use.
What does this mean for uninformed women who don't take control of their health care decisions and continue or start taking synthetic hormone replacement therapy drugs like Premarin and Prempro? Certainly, there will be more cases of breast cancer, heart disease, strokes and blood clots.
And then, what if we have universal health care on the Canadian or European model? More women will die. Why? According to a CBN report in October, 85,000 patients are on a waiting list for care in the United Kingdom alone. Half of all men in the UK with prostrate cancer die - three times the number in the United States (where they are treated without having to wait). People there are denied a promising cancer drug, because it is deemed too expensive - a treatment people in the US can get.
In Canada, the wait times for critical care are so long that a lawsuit over the lengthy waits was filed - and, you can't even get private care there. It is against the law. The CATO Institute said that one in seven doctors sends his/her patients to the US for treatment.
Even with all of this country's health care problems, it still is the best place in the world for health care. Most of the Nobel Prize for Medicine recipients come from America (this year, 2 Americans share that honor with one UK recipient). Most promising research and development of new treatments come from our soil.
Ladies, the reason for this website is to inform and educate. The best treatment for serious disease is prevention - don't get cancer or any life-threatening disease in the first place. Follow the guidelines for healthy living - exercise, eat healthy, stay away from all cancer -causing substances. That way you won't have to be concerned if government-run health care comes to us. You'll be so healthy you won't notice the problems it is causing everyone else (except for the higher taxes you will be paying).
