NIH Halts Estrogen Study.

Increased stroke risk prompted the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to halt the estrogen-only study early, just 18 months after the NIH put an early end to the estrogen-progestin portion of the landmark government study.

This new piece of anti estrogen news shows there are no real health benefits beyond menopause relief in taking estrogen pills and that health risks certainly counterbalance any menopause benefit of estrogen.

The Philadelphia Inquirer and the New York Times both ran articles about the study March 3, 2004. These articles were based on a partial report released by the NIH. The report was so preliminary that it did not include actual data from the estrogen study.

The partial release suggests that the stroke risk of the estrogen-only pill is similar to the increased stroke risk found with the estrogen-progestin study. A detailed report, including the results of the study investigating the anti benefits of estrogen on mental functioning, is expected to be published in April. We will report on the actual estrogen study data as information becomes available.

In the meantime, protect your health and consider using natural, bio-identical estrogen and progesterone if you are still using synthetic hormones.

NEW!! NEW!!! BIG DRUG COMPANIES USING THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION IN AN ATTEMPT TO DESTROY COMPETITION FROM NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES!!!

Do you remember our newsletter last year detailing how Wyeth Pharmaceuticals was attempting to stop compounding pharmacists from prescribing natural progesterone (diosgenin) after their profits fell by more than 57%  from $2.07 billion in 2003 to $800 million in 2004 (after the WHI study had to be stopped)?

Well, now they have gone after centers like ours making complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).  The FTC's position backed by the big pharmaceutical companies is that Dr. John Lee, M.D.'s studies were not scientific and did not rise to the standard of FDA and National Institutes of Health studies, and that our claims about natural progesterone are false, unfair, deceptive, misleading advertising in violation of the law..

 (Please read what Dr. Helen Pensanti M.D. has to say about this. Read on to how the study was conducted.)

This is an attempt to force women into taking unsafe proven cancer causing synthetic hormones using your tax dollar to harass natural hormone suppliers. We here at the Women's Menopause Health Center refuse to take away your choice of a healthy alternative to Premarin, Prempro and the other dangerous drugs. We are taking a stand against this heavy handed attempt to destroy competition. We are going to fight for your choice of a healthy way to get through menopause comfortably and safely.

(Ed. note: This was from our newsletter last year. The continued harassment by the FTC has caused us to discontinue our wonderful product. DO NOT be forced into taking something that can kill you. You may purchase safe progesterone cream at your local health food store, or find it a lot less expensively on line at places like ebay and yahoo stores. Do not let these heavy handed tactics destroy your health!)

Although a large number of women stopped using synthetic hormone replacement therapy after the first portion of the NIH study clearly showed the life-threatening danger of synthetic hormones, some women still continue to place their health at risk. Why?

The woman still using synthetic hormone replacement therapy either;

1) Has not heard of the health risks of using HRT.

2) Does not care.

3) Does not know that there are highly effective ways to get rid of hot flashes and other menopause symptoms without resorting to synthetic hormones.

The first scenario is highly unlikely, as is the second. The third situation is what we see daily. Women know about the National Institute of Health studies and are concerned. They might have stopped using HRT, only to experience a return of menopause symptoms. Or, they remain on HRT because they do not know how to make the switch from synthetic to natural hormone replacement therapy or what treatment to use.

The January Women’s Menopause Health newsletter provides a step-by-step approach to switching from synthetic to natural hormone replacement therapy. The newsletter outlining how to select a quality progesterone cream will also be of benefit.

There is a new book entitled "The Hormone Survival Guide for Perimenopause" set for release during National Women’s Health Week May 9, 2004. The Women’s Menopause Health staff had the opportunity to review this book and found the information quite beneficial. For more information about "The Hormone Survival Guide for Perimenopause," read the publisher’s press release concerning the NIH move to halt the estrogen-only portion of the study.
