What can we do about the whole sorry mess? A number of things, but first a few theories.

The fact of a higher incidence of hypothyroidism in women is probably because hormonal imbalance acts as a trigger for thyroid problems. Women's bodies have a delicate balance of hormones like estrogen and progesterone, which can be upset when your body is under stress and not receiving enough support. Perimenopause, menopause and pregnancy are times in a woman's life when hormonal imbalance is particularly common, and are also associated with hypothyroidism.

The late Dr. John Lee long argued that an excess of estrogen combined with low progesterone is also a major trigger of hormone imbalance and what we labeled as "estrogen dominance." Estrogen is typical of early perimenopause. When strong synthetic estrogens, such as those in Premarin, are prescribed, it may exacerbate estrogen dominance. Dr. Lee postulated that curbing estrogen dominance prevents many problems in perimenopause, including hypothyroidism.

(John R. Lee, M.D. is an international authority and pioneer in the use of natural progesterone cream and natural hormone balance. He authored the best-selling book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause: The Breakthrough Book on Natural Progesterone" - Recommended reading.)

Although there are many thyroid boosting medications out there from over-the-counter to prescription medications, we here at the Women's Menopause Health Center recommend a natural approach.

In an article by Darlene Manchester entitled, "Do Natural Thyroid Boosters Work?" she says that hypothyroidism occurs when there is an inadequate secretion of thyroid hormones resulting in a slowing down of the body's metabolism. So many people just don't know how far-reaching an underactive thyroid problem can be and what the symptoms are.

Many of the symptoms associated with an underactive thyroid are: fatigue; weight gain; decreased interest in daily activities; decreased libido; difficulty in maintaining concentration; sleep disturbances; cold extremities; high cholesterol; dry skin, hair, nails; and, abdominal bloating.

Many physicians prescribe thyroid medications, only to find out that they were associated with significant side effects. These drugs may cause chest pain, increased pulse rate, palpitations, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, or nervousness. It is recommended that people who have multiple health concerns use caution when taking any prescription medications. There is also the possibility that once started on these prescriptions, the body becomes dependent on them and they become a lifelong medication.

It is for those reasons that a natural, high quality thyroid supplement should be the first course of action. These products contain thyroid boosting ingredients which support healthy thyroid function. As with all natural products, within 6 weeks to 3 months of taking these products, you shoud see:

  • An increase of metabolic rate, the number of calories burned, and gradual, healthy weight loss.
  •  Increased energy.
  •  Increase memory and concentration.
  •  More restful sleep.
  •  Improved quality of life.

You might not need to resort to prescription strength drugs to achieve your goal of optimal thyroid function. Natural supplements give you an excellent alternative to prescription strength thyroid drugs. These products have limited side effects, less drug interactions, and are less expensive than a lot of the prescription strength thyroid medications available on the market today. And.......you will find that the Växa Thyroid Function formula is far less expensive, not to mention more effective, than currently advertised and expensive natural supplement thyroid boosters.

Based on current research and recent problems with both pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter drugs, natural alternative thyroid boosting products are probably the best option. Remember to be consistent and administer as directed for optimal benefits.
