Best selling author Dr. Nicholas Perricone, M.D. called essential fatty acids one of the ten super foods to look younger and live longer. His book, “The Perricone Promise” is highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to, among many other reasons, loose weight using omega 3 fatty acids with menopause dieting.
Here are some of the reasons he lists to include essential fatty acids (EFA) also known as omega 3 fatty acids, in your daily diet:
Help regulate metabolism and burn body fat (so helpful when you are menopause dieting). Prevent or reduce inflammation, especially autoimmune diseases. Protect against heart disease. Protect against mental depression while preserving cognitive function. Help protect against colon, breast and prostate cancers. Help protect organs from toxins. Lower total cholesterol. Lower blood pressure. Decrease the risk of blood clots. Promote digestive health. And, finally, keep the skin supple and wrinkle free. Wow! What a line up of benefits from making a simple change in your diet like using flax oil as a base for your salad dressings or eating fish like salmon more often. (See our food recipe section for an easy, wonderfully tasty, Citrus Vinaigrette Salad Dressing recipe or the Blueberry and Flax Milkshake.)
EFA’s come from many readily available sources which can be found in the average grocery store, but are better purchased from your local natural foods market. The “king” of the plant EFA’s is flaxseed oil. Dr. Johanna Budwig was nominated for the Nobel Prize in medicine a whopping seven times for her research with flaxseed oil combined with protein. Her book on the subject is for brainiacs as she equates how flaxseed oil works in the body with quantum physics, but the point comes across loud and clear - add EFA’s to your diet and even terminal illness can be chased into remission. Loosing weight using omega-3 fatty acids for menopause dieting is a cake walk compared to cancer.
Other sources of plant derived omega 3 fatty acids are: nuts of all kinds, seeds, and dark, leafy vegetables.
The best food sources of omega 3 fatty acids is fish oil, because it is a long chain fat and also contains the two types of omega-3 fats - EPA and DHA - that the body can use without modification. (Human breast milk is very rich in omega-3 DHA, which is critical to the formation of healthy brains in infants.) There has been a resurgence of interest in this time honored remedy (remember Shirley Temple having to hold her nose and take a spoon of cod liver oil?). Dr. Barry Sears, M.D., author of the Zone Diet books, recently wrote a book entirely on the benefits of using fish oil.
Granted, fish oil doesn’t taste the best, but modern fish oils are a vast improvement over the Shirley Temple version. Orange, lemon and lime is added to improve the taste, or it can be taken in capsule form. The key is to purchase pharmaceutical grade fish oils. Dr. Sears markets his own brand which includes a high grade of oil only available from medical professionals. That grade is quite expensive, so I opt for Barlean’s brand fish oil available at most health food stores. Barlean’s flaxseed oil also is the best on the market.
As a final encouragement to add this wonder food to your diet, it is unfortunate that when it comes to EFA’s, the American diet is woefully unbalanced: too high in omega-6 EFA’s and too low in omega-3 EFA’s. Over the last century, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in our diet has changed from the estimated prehistoric ratio of 3:1 or 5:1 (the same ration found in human cells) to an alarmingly imbalanced ratio of about 15:1. This sets the stage for increases in the tendency of blood to clot, narrowing of blood vessels and raising of blood pressure, to chronic inflammation.
And, incidentally, of the two dozen fats essential to human health, only two cannot be made by your body and must be derived from food - omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

NEW!! NEW!!! BIG DRUG COMPANIES USING THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION IN AN ATTEMPT TO DESTROY COMPETITION FROM NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES!!!
Do you remember our newsletter last year detailing how Wyeth Pharmaceuticals was attempting to stop compounding pharmacists from prescribing natural progesterone (diosgenin) after their profits fell by more than 57% from $2.07 billion in 2003 to $800 million in 2004 (after the WHI study had to be stopped)?
Well, now they have gone after centers like ours making complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC's position backed by the big pharmaceutical companies is that Dr. John Lee, M.D.'s studies were not scientific and did not rise to the standard of FDA and National Institutes of Health studies, and that our claims about natural progesterone are false, unfair, deceptive, misleading advertising in violation of the law..
This is an attempt to force women into taking unsafe proven cancer causing synthetic hormones using your tax dollar to harass natural hormone suppliers. We here at the Women's Menopause Health Center refuse to take away your choice of a healthy alternative to Premarin, Prempro and the other dangerous drugs. We are taking a stand against this heavy handed attempt to destroy competition. We are going to fight for your choice of a healthy way to get through menopause comfortably and safely.
(Ed. note: This was from our newsletter last year. The continued harassment by the FTC has caused us to discontinue our wonderful product. DO NOT be forced into taking something that can kill you. You may purchase safe progesterone cream at your local health food store, or find it a lot less expensively on line at places like ebay and yahoo stores. Do not let these heavy handed tactics destroy your health!)
