In addition to the physical changes a women experiences in perimenopause, the emotional issues of depression, anxiety, anger and mood swing issues often go hand-in-hand with perimenopause, the transitional time before menopause.

One study places perimenopause women at double the risk for depression than pre menopausal women. This study also found no difference in depression rates between women taking hormone replacement therapy and those not taking HRT.

While perimenopause is a period of increased risk for depression, a history of depression also places women at an increased risk for an earlier onset of perimenopause.

Recent studies also conclude that perimenopause, in itself, does not cause depressions, anger, anxiety and mood swing issues, but that the hormone fluctuation in perimenopause act as a trigger for pre-existing depression, anger, anxiety and mood swing issues.

For women who experience feelings of depression - loss of appetite, insomnia and general loss of pleasure in life - or anger, anxiety or mood swing issues during perimenopause, some simple lifestyle changes can help alleviate these stresses.

Numerous studies point to the positive affects of exercise on depression and stress-related anger, anxiety and mood swing issues. Exercise has antidepressant and anxiolytic effects and exercise is a great stress-buster. A brisk walk three times each week may help women in perimenopause recover faster from depression, reduce its severity or even ward off depression altogether. Other studies show that people who exercise regularly typically have fewer mental and physical health problems.

Exercise boosts serotonin levels and can also stimulate endorphins. Exercise burns energy, which can help you sleep better at night and it burns calories, which helps with the weight gain often associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Simply taking your frustrations and anger out on the walking path diverts the frustrations from erupting on spouses, children, friends and co-workers.

The best way to start a new exercise regime is by starting slow and setting realistic goals. Many women find that walking or working out with a group helps them stay on track with their exercise goals.

Making a commitment to walking for just 10 minutes three times a day for two to three weeks can firmly establish an exercise habit. Once your exercise habit is established, gradually increase the length and intensity of workouts. Ideally, women with perimenopause depression, anxiety, anger and mood swings should exercise a minimum of 30 minutes three to four days each week.

It may take several weeks of regular exercise before you notice an improvement in your mood so start your new exercise regime with a long-haul commitment. Studies show that people see the greatest effects after four months of regular exercise.

Talk with your doctor first about an exercise regime if you have a medical condition or are out of shape.

Diet also plays an important role in the emotional aspects of depression, anger, anxiety and mood swings. Trading junk food and processed foods for a diet rich in protein and especially Omega-3 essential fatty acids can greatly help regulate the brain. Omega-3 fatty acids are absolutely necessary to healthy mental functioning and essential fatty acid deficiencies can make women more susceptible to depression. Cold water fish like salmon and tuna, along with flaxseed oil, are great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Women in perimenopause suffering from depression, anger, anxiety and mood swings should also reduce their intake of sugar, caffeine and carbohydrates. These diet elements give a quick lift but what goes up must come down...

Several dietary supplements are considered important to mental functionality. Women in perimenopause who experience depression, anger, anxiety and mood swing issues should consider supplementing their diet with specific food sources. The amino acid tryptophan, a natural relaxant, reduces anxiety and depression by increasing serotonin levels. GABA works as a natural tranquilizer. DLPA raises endorphin levels and tyrosene is a natural stimulant.

NEW!! NEW!!! BIG DRUG COMPANIES USING THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION IN AN ATTEMPT TO DESTROY COMPETITION FROM NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES!!!

Do you remember our newsletter last year detailing how Wyeth Pharmaceuticals was attempting to stop compounding pharmacists from prescribing natural progesterone (diosgenin) after their profits fell by more than 57%  from $2.07 billion in 2003 to $800 million in 2004 (after the WHI study had to be stopped)?

Well, now they have gone after centers like ours making complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).  The FTC's position backed by the big pharmaceutical companies is that Dr. John Lee, M.D.'s studies were not scientific and did not rise to the standard of FDA and National Institutes of Health studies, and that our claims about natural progesterone are false, unfair, deceptive, misleading advertising in violation of the law..

(Please read what Dr. Helen Pensanti M.D. has to say about this. Read on to how the study was conducted.)

This is an attempt to force women into taking unsafe proven cancer causing synthetic hormones using your tax dollar to harass natural hormone suppliers. We here at the Women's Menopause Health Center refuse to take away your choice of a healthy alternative to Premarin, Prempro and the other dangerous drugs. We are taking a stand against this heavy handed attempt to destroy competition. We are going to fight for your choice of a healthy way to get through menopause comfortably and safely.

(Ed. note: This was from our newsletter last year. The continued harassment by the FTC has caused us to discontinue our wonderful product. DO NOT be forced into taking something that can kill you. You may purchase safe progesterone cream at your local health food store, or find it a lot less expensively on line at places like ebay and yahoo stores. Do not let these heavy handed tactics destroy your health!)
