Perimenopause and menopause are times in a woman's life fraught with the chance of an unplanned pregnancy. During the pre or peri-menopause stage, menstrual periods may be difficult to predict and widely spaced, but women are still producing eggs. During this perimenopause time they still are able to become pregnant.

In fact, menopause isn't technically reached until menstrual periods have ceased for one full year. Until that point is reached, a perimenopause pregnancy is still a possibility.

On the other hand, perimenopause also is a time fraught with peril for those women desiring a pregnancy. Egg quality starts to diminish as a woman enters her late 30's.  The diminished egg quality with the resulting lower number of eggs often results in miscarriages. Lower ovarian reserves can be tested by measuring FSH and estradiol levels on the third day of the menstrual cycle. The newer inhibin B test may better indicate reproductive capabilities. Low values in this test point to diminished chances of pregnancy and a possible greater risk of miscarriage.
