Pregnancy and
Progesterone.
Progesterone, the `mother’ hormone in and during pregnancy, can be the
deciding factor between early pregnancy miscarriage or a wonderful bundle
of joy.
At a normal level, progesterone prepares the uterine wall for implantation
of the fertilized egg. At a low progesterone level, the fertilized egg
will be expelled. During pregnancy, progesterone inhibits the uterus from
contracting at a normal level, which allows the fetus to grow with the
expanding uterus. A low progesterone level in pregnancy can result in
miscarriage.

NEW!! NEW!!! BIG DRUG COMPANIES
USING THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION IN AN ATTEMPT TO DESTROY COMPETITION FROM
NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPIES!!!
Do you remember our newsletter
last year detailing how Wyeth Pharmaceuticals was attempting to stop
compounding pharmacists from prescribing natural progesterone (diosgenin)
after their profits fell by more than 57% from $2.07 billion in 2003 to
$800 million in 2004 (after the WHI study had to be stopped)?
Well, now they have gone after
centers like ours making complaints to the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC). The FTC's position backed by the big pharmaceutical companies is
that Dr. John Lee, M.D.'s studies were not scientific and did not rise to
the standard of FDA and National Institutes of Health studies, and that
our claims about natural progesterone are false, unfair, deceptive,
misleading advertising in violation of the law..
(Please read
what Dr. Helen Pensanti M.D. has to say about this. Read on to how the study
was conducted.)
This is an attempt to force women into taking
unsafe proven cancer causing synthetic hormones using
your tax dollar to harass natural hormone suppliers. We here at the Women's
Menopause Health Center refuse to take away your choice of a healthy
alternative to Premarin, Prempro and the other dangerous drugs. We are
taking a stand against this heavy handed attempt to destroy competition. We
are going to fight for your choice of a healthy way to get through menopause
comfortably and safely.
(Ed. note: This was from our newsletter last year. The
continued harassment by the FTC has caused us to discontinue our wonderful
product. DO NOT be forced
into taking something that can kill you. You may purchase safe
progesterone cream at your local health food store, or find it a lot less
expensively on line at places like ebay and yahoo stores.
Do not let these heavy handed tactics destroy your health!)

In short, a normal progesterone level is crucial in conception and
necessary for the survival of the fertilized egg during early pregnancy.
Women with a low progesterone level will use a natural progesterone cream
like Preserve to bring their progesterone level into the normal
range to give their body the hormonal support it needs to conceive and
carry a pregnancy.
Because natural progesterone is bioidentical to the progesterone the human
body makes, no adverse effects on fetal development have been reported.
Not only is natural progesterone cream safe for use during pregnancy, it
is recommended - for women with a low progesterone level and for women
with a progesterone level in the normal range.
Dr. John Lee is considered the foremost authority on the use of natural
progesterone. In his book "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About
Menopause," Dr. Lee addresses the role of low and normal progesterone
levels in and during early pregnancy through delivery.
Other sources and studies also cite progesterone’s beneficial role in
pregnancy.
Dr. Neil H. Lauersen, from the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York,
states in "Premenstrual Syndrome & You" that natural progesterone can be
helpful to maintain pregnancy but that synthetic progestins should not be
used because the synthetic hormones can adversely affect the developing
fetus.
A 1968 study of mothers using natural progesterone while pregnant showed a
greater level of early childhood development and greater academic
performance in school. None of the mothers using natural progesterone
developed toxemia while half the mothers in the control group experienced
toxemia.
This study of 90 children whose mothers used natural progesterone compared
with matched controls of children whose mothers did not receive
progesterone showed that more of the progesterone babies were standing and
walking at one year. At ages 9 to 10, more demonstrated superior
performance compared to the control group, in academic subjects such as
verbal reasoning, English and arithmetic.
In the June 12, 2003 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, a
published study found that progesterone significantly reduced the pre-term
delivery rate of "at risk mothers". It was also noted that the infants
were healthier as well. Intestinal necrosis, intra ventricular hemorrhage
(bleeding in the brain), and the need for oxygen in these infants were
significantly reduced.
A 2003 study showed that progesterone prevents premature contractions.
According to Dr. Carole Mendelson, as published in the July 18, 2003 issue
of the National Academy of Sciences, progesterone prevents the uterus from
contracting throughout most of the pregnancy.
As a side note, healthier skin, hair, and muscle tone - that "Mother's
Glow" is attributed to a normal and healthy level of progesterone.
If you are struggling with infertility or have a history of miscarriage,
it will serve you well to look at a low progesterone level as a possible
cause of problems. If you are planning a pregnancy in the near future, it
will also serve you well to consider using progesterone as a supplement
during early pregnancy and beyond. As a note, maintaining a normal
progesterone level will also help eliminate postpartum depression.
