In 2002 about six million women regularly used Prempro, a commonly prescribed hormone replacement therapy of a combined estrogen and progestin. That same year health researchers issued dramatic warnings concerning Prempro after a major study found significant health risks associated with Prempro and other combine hormone replacement therapy drugs like Femhrt.

Prempro - along with Femhrt, Ortho-Prefest, Premphase and other combined estrogen and progestin HRT - carry severe side effects that can be deadly for women, the Prempro-damning Women’s Health Initiative study found.

This study found the following Prempro side effects;

  • 26 percent increase in breast cancer.
  • 41 percent increase in strokes.
  • 29 percent increase in heart attacks.
  • 100 percent increase of blood clots in legs and lungs.

Although Prempro was the only estrogen progestin combination drug tested in the study, researchers warned against all combined hormone therapy drugs. These include Femhrt, Ortho-Prefest and Premphase.

The Women’s Health Initiative study found that Prempro side effects and side effects of Femhrt and other combined HRT have the ability to harm massive amounts of women.

In translating the percentages into real life numbers, researchers stated that out of 10,000 healthy, postmenopausal women taking Prempro for a year, there would be .08 percent additional cases of breast cancer than in 10,000 women who did not take Prempro. Another .07 percent of women taking Prempro will have a heart attack, .08 percent additional women taking Prempro will have a stroke and another .08 percent of women taking Prempro will have blood clots in the lungs.

But let’s take those numbers and look at them in the true scope of this health calamity. In 2002, 6 million women were taking Prempro. In multiplying out the numbers against the 6 million, we see the broad-reaching health effects to women.

For the 6 million women taking Prempro, there will be:

  • 4,800 additional breast cancer cases. (6,000,000 multiplied by .08 percent)
  • 4,200 more heart attacks. (6,000,000 multiplied by .07 percent)
  •  4,800 more strokes. (6,000,000 multiplied by .08 percent)
  • 4,800 more blood clot cases. (6,000,000 multiplied by .08 percent)

Immediately after the release of this shattering study, attorneys across the country began gathering a pool of women who took Prempro, Femhrt and other combined HRT and experienced serious side effects. We expect to see a class-action suit filed against the makers of Prempro, Femhrt and other combined HRT in the near future.

But along with the serious and potentially life-threatening Prempro side effects, there are also a long list of other Prempro side effects that affect women taking Prempro, Femhrt and other combined HRT. Now here’s the kicker – most of the Prempro side effects listed by the manufacturer are also menopause side effects. Why take a harmful Prempro prescription for menopause side effects if Prempro produces other menopause side effects?

Other Prempro Side effects include (but are not limited to):

  • Sharp chest pain.
  • Sharp lower leg (calf) pain.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Vision problems.
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • Breast lumps.
  • Dizziness.
  • Fluid retention.
  • Nausea.
  • Severe abdominal pain and swelling.
  • Breast tenderness.
  • Depression.
  • Irregular bleeding.
  • Headache.
  • Irritability.
  • Mood changes.
  • Increased uterine fibroids.
  • Weight gain.
  • Fatigue.
  • Changes in sleep patterns.
  • Acne.
  • Decreased libido.
  • Hair loss.
  • Can worsen diabetes.

Manufactures also warn that women should not take Prempro, Femhrt or other combined HRT if they have a history of breast cancer or uterine cancer, liver disease, abnormal vaginal bleeding or have had a stroke.

Despite the significant and life-threatening health risks of Prempro side effects, along with the minor yet uncomfortable Prempro side effects, countless women remain on Prempro and other combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy like Femhrt, Premphase and Ortho-Prefest.

WHY?

Hormone replacement therapy has been around for five decades and has become so accepted, almost a rite of menopause passage. Women might automatically look to hormone replacement therapy instead of healthy means of reducing menopause symptoms without side effects common in Prempro, Femhrt and other hormone replacement therapy drugs.

Some women take an "It won’t happen to me" approach to the increased cancer and heart disease risks that go hand-in-hand with hormone replacement therapy. Others might not fully understand the broad implications of the shattering Women’s Health Initiative study. Yet others may not know that they can effectively relieve themselves of menopause symptoms without hormone replacement therapy.

We believe all women should remain educated about the harmful side effects of Prempro, Femhrt and other HRT and make choices accordingly.

Synthetic hormone replacement therapy provides relief of menopausal symptoms but the side effects of Prempro, Femhrt and other hormone replacement therapy drugs are not worth the risk - especially when viable and effective alternative exist.
